Key chatter test

One key, two letters. It looks like a typo you keep making, which is why people live with it for months before realising the keyboard is doing it. This measures the gap between the presses, and a switch that chatters produces gaps no finger can.

How to run it

Press the key you suspect about twenty times, at the pace you actually type, with a clear release between presses. The first key you press becomes the one under test, so start with the suspect one — everything else is ignored.

If nothing shows up, try again typing at speed rather than deliberately. Chatter frequently only appears under a fast roll, because the contacts have less time to settle.

Reading the numbers

Presses is what arrived.

Chatter detected counts releases followed by a press within fifty milliseconds.

Shortest gap is the tightest pair. Nobody can release and press a key again inside fifty milliseconds; the fastest deliberate double tap is around a hundred. Anything below that came from the switch.

What to do about it

Raise the debounce time, if your keyboard runs firmware that allows it. QMK, VIA and several manufacturer utilities expose it. This is the free fix and it is complete — the extra press never reaches the computer.

Replace the switch. On a hot-swappable board this is a sixty-second job with no tools and a spare switch. On a soldered board it is a desoldering job for one switch.

Clean it first if you have nothing else to hand. Contact cleaner into the switch housing, worked by pressing the key a few dozen times, sometimes restores contact for a while. It is a delay rather than a repair, but it costs nothing.

Windows 11

There is a setting called Filter Keys, under Settings, Accessibility, Keyboard, which ignores brief or repeated keystrokes. It will mask chatter. Be careful with it: it applies to every key on every keyboard and it can swallow genuine fast typing, which trades one frustrating fault for another.

macOS

Slow Keys, in System Settings, Accessibility, Keyboard, is the nearest equivalent and carries the same trade-off. macOS has no per-key debounce, so for an external keyboard the firmware or the switch is where the fix lives.

Common questions

How is this different from a sticky key?

A sticky key holds down and repeats continuously — you get a long run of the same letter. Chatter is two, occasionally three, in a burst from one press. The causes are different too: sticking is usually contamination under the cap, chatter is worn contacts inside the switch.

Why does it only affect one key?

Because each key is its own switch with its own wear. The keys that fail first are the ones used most — E, A, space, and whichever your habits favour. A keyboard with one chattering key is normal; a keyboard with several is old.

Can I fix it without replacing the keyboard?

Often, yes. On a hot-swappable mechanical keyboard, pulling the switch out and putting a new one in takes a minute and no tools. On a soldered board it is a soldering job. Some keyboard firmware, including QMK and VIA, lets you raise the debounce time, which masks it entirely at no cost. Contact cleaner sprayed into the switch sometimes buys months.

Could it be the software or the driver?

Very unlikely. Drivers do not invent keystrokes, and a fault that follows one specific key rather than one specific application is hardware by definition. Test the same key in a different application to confirm it travels with the key.

My laptop keyboard chatters. Is that fixable?

Rarely at the switch level, since laptop keyboards are a single membrane or scissor assembly rather than individual switches. The usual outcomes are living with it, an external keyboard, or replacing the whole assembly — which on many laptops means replacing most of the upper case.
