Stuck pixel fixer

A stuck pixel is frozen in one state but still receiving power, which means there is something to work with. Cycling its neighbours through every colour as fast as the panel can switch sometimes shakes it loose. It does not always work — but it costs ten minutes and it is the only home remedy worth trying.

How to use it

  1. Run the dead pixel test first and note exactly where the bad pixel is. It is easy to lose track of once the flashing starts.
  2. Start the fixer. A square of rapidly changing colour appears in the middle of the screen.
  3. Drag the square over the bad pixel, or move it with the arrow keys — hold shift for larger steps.
  4. Leave it running for at least ten minutes. Space pauses so you can check on the pixel without exiting.
  5. Press Esc to leave, then run the pixel test again to see whether anything changed.

The square is deliberately not the whole screen. It needs to sit precisely over the affected area, and a small bright region is easier to leave running than a full-screen strobe.

Why it sometimes works

A pixel is made of three sub-pixels, each a liquid crystal cell that twists to let light through. A stuck sub-pixel is one whose cell is no longer changing state with the signal — it is receiving power, but not responding.

Driving the surrounding area through rapid, large colour transitions forces repeated hard voltage swings across that region. In some cases that is enough to unstick a cell that has settled into one position. It is closer to jiggling a sticky switch than to a repair, which is why it works on some pixels and not on others.

It does nothing for a dead pixel, because there is nothing to jiggle — the transistor driving that cell has failed and the cell receives no signal at all.

What not to do

Do not press on the screen. This is the most common advice on the internet and the most likely to cost you money. Pressure can permanently damage the liquid crystal layer, and pressure marks are not covered by warranty.

Do not use a heat source or a hairdryer. Uneven heating stresses the panel and the adhesive layers.

Do not install a desktop application to do this. It is a flashing rectangle. Anything that asks to install software for it is asking for more access than the task needs.

If it does not recover

Check your warranty position before you do anything else. Most manufacturers apply pixel fault classes from ISO 9241-307, and most consumer displays are Class II, which tolerates a small number of faults per million pixels — a single stuck pixel usually falls inside what the standard permits and will be refused.

Two things improve your position: the fault being present from new, and documentation. Photograph the pixel against a white and a black background with the surrounding screen area in frame, and note the date.

If the screen is new and still within the retailer return window, that is almost always a better route than a manufacturer warranty claim. Retailer return policies do not have pixel fault clauses in them.

Common questions

Does this actually work?

Sometimes. It works on pixels that are stuck rather than dead — a sub-pixel frozen in one state that rapid switching can dislodge. It has no effect at all on a dead pixel, where the transistor has failed and no signal reaches the cell. There is no reliable published success rate, and anyone quoting one is making it up. What can be said is that it is free, it takes ten minutes, and it cannot make anything worse.

How long should I run it?

Start with ten minutes and check. If there is any change at all, keep going — that is the sign it is working. If nothing has changed after thirty minutes across two or three attempts, further running is unlikely to help.

Can this damage my screen?

Rapid colour cycling is well within what a panel does normally, so there is no risk to an LCD. Two cautions: on an OLED panel, do not run it for very long in one position, since prolonged high-intensity content is the mechanism behind burn-in; and if you are sensitive to flashing light, do not watch the flashing area directly.

Should I try pressing on the pixel?

No. The pressure method circulates widely and it is a genuinely bad idea. Pressing an LCD panel can damage the liquid crystal layer permanently, turning a single stuck pixel into a visible pressure mark or a cluster of dead ones. The failure mode is worse than the fault you started with, and it is not covered by warranty.

What is the difference between a stuck and a dead pixel again?

Look at it against a white background. A pixel that is black on white is dead — no power, nothing to fix. A pixel that glows red, green, blue or white against backgrounds where it should be dark is stuck, and stuck is the case this tool addresses.
